May 15, 2026 - The United States is exploring opportunities in Guyana’s bauxite sector. It is also interested in surveying mining areas to identify additional mineral resources, according to the US Under Secretary of Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg.

Helberg met with Irfaan Ali and other government officials during a visit to Guyana on Wednesday. Following the meeting, he said discussions included possible US participation in the country’s bauxite mining industry.

He said talks also focused on surveying lands where large mineral reserves may exist, but where detailed exploration has not yet been carried out. According to Helberg, Guyana’s existing bauxite reserves are already known, though further surveys are needed to better understand the country’s wider mineral potential.

Helberg stated that Guyana has significant natural resources and that broader geological surveys could identify additional mineral deposits beyond bauxite. He added that improving the country’s ability to attract foreign investment would help expand technical capacity for advanced mineral exploration and surveying.

The US official said increasing foreign investment in Guyana forms part of Washington’s broader economic strategy. He noted that easier access for international companies and improved surveying technologies could support future mining and resource development projects in the country.

Guyana is one of the world’s major bauxite-producing countries and has been seeking greater international investment across its mining and natural resources sectors.
