China's imports of bauxite exceeded 0.2 billion tons in 2025

Jan. 26, 2026 - With the continuous growth of China's industrial alumina output, the import quantity of bauxite to China has once again reached a new high. In 2025, China imported 200,531,900 tons of bauxite, representing a year-on-year increase of 26.40%, but China's exports of bauxite in 2025 were only 21,400 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 10.53%.
In terms of the importing provinces, Shandong Province has the highest quantity of bauxite imports. This is because Shandong Province has the highest output of industrial alumina, and its bauxite mainly comes from imports. In 2025, Shandong Province imported as much as 113.6213 million tons of bauxite, representing a year-on-year growth of 24.22%. Hebei Province imported 17.2478 million tons, up 19.40% year-on-year. The import quantity of Zhejiang Province was 16.607 million tons, increasing by 38.48% year-on-year. Chongqing's imports reached 11.4475 million tons, up by 15.20% year-on-year. The imports of the remaining provinces were all below 10 million tons. Both Shanxi and Henan, the main production areas of alumina, have relatively low import quantity, especially Henan.
In terms of the source countries of imports, in 2025, China imported 148.9936 million tons of bauxite from Guinea, an increase of 35.34% year-on-year, accounting for 74.30% of the total imports. Shandong, Hebei, Shanghai, Fujian, Chongqing and Shanxi have imported over 5 million tons of bauxite from Guinea, with imports of 83.4096 million tons, 17.1789 million tons, 8.7472 million tons, 8.5296 million tons, 8.0245 million tons and 5.5603 million tons respectively. Both Shandong Province and Hebei Province have an import quantity of over 10 million tons. Shanxi, Henan and Guizhou can produce bauxite that can be used for industrial alumina production.
China's bauxite imports from Australia stood at 37.3469 million tons in 2025, a year-on-year decrease of 6.36%. The province with the highest import quantity was still Shandong Province, reaching 25.8024 million tons, followed by Zhejiang Province and Chongqing Municipality, with imports of 8.1231 million tons and 1.4255 million tons respectively. The import quantity of the rest of the provinces and municipalities were all within 750,000 tons.
In 2025, China's bauxite imports from Turkey amounted to 3.1388 million tons; Imports from Sierra Leone were 2.2264 million tons; Imports from Guyana and Laos were 1.5777 million tons and 1.4954 million tons respectively; Imports from Cote d 'Ivoire, Ghana and Brazil were all over 900,000 tons, and the imports of bauxite from other countries were all within 400,000 tons.
