CNY 10.7 billion alumina project breaks ground in Inner Mongolia

2026-06-01

Jun. 1, 2026 - China Huaye officially commenced construction of the EPC alumina project for Inner Mongolia Xinlian Aluminum Co., Ltd. in the New Industrial Park of Tumd Right Banner, Baotou, Inner Mongolia. The project is designed to become one of the largest alumina production bases in northern China, with a planned annual capacity of 7 million tonnes.

According to project information released during the groundbreaking ceremony, the total investment amounts to CNY 10.72 billion, including CNY 7.079 billion for the first phase. The project is scheduled for construction during 2025–2026. Once fully completed, it is expected to generate annual output value of approximately CNY 42 billion.

The facility is positioned as the first large-scale alumina production base in the Hohhot–Baotou–Ordos economic region and will focus on the production of high-purity alumina grades used in strategic sectors such as new energy, aerospace and advanced materials. The first phase is targeted for commissioning in 2026.

Supporting infrastructure for the project has also begun to take shape. In May 2026, Zhongke Hefei Gasification Technology signed an EPC contract with Inner Mongolia Xinlian Aluminum for a clean coal gasification station serving a 3.5 million tpy alumina production line. The facility will utilize three 80,000 Nm³/h circulating fluidized-bed gasifiers to supply fuel gas for two 10,000 tpd alumina calciners.

The project reflects continued investment in China's alumina sector, particularly in resource-rich regions with access to coal, logistics infrastructure and downstream aluminum production. Upon completion, the 7 million tpy capacity will rank among the country's major alumina production projects and further strengthen the alumina supply chain in Inner Mongolia.
